Trainer W.J. Shean
The Wash caused one of the biggest upsets in Australian turf history when at 16-1 he beat the 1-5 favourite Pride of Egypt into second place in the 1955 QTC Derby. Winning jockey Noel Best often recalled how the other Queensland jockeys in the race cheered as he sailed past Pride of Egypt, a boom Sydney colt, in the straight. Later that season The Wash won the Brisbane Cup and QTC St Leger for jockey Jack Purtell. His efforts made him one of the all time great Brisbane three-year-old stayers but in 21 starts as an older horse he won only one more race a Doomben open handicap.
