A former army commando, Bill Calder trained for many years in western Queensland before coming to Brisbane in the 1960s. His first top horse was Rocky Court but he produced a steady stream of outstanding gallopers from a small team for the next 40 years. His best horses included Dancing Poet (Stradbroke Handicap), Prince Salieri (Castlemaine Stakes), Chief de Beers (Doomben 10,000 [2], AWA Stakes [2], Courier-Mail Classic, Doomben Stakes, Fosters Cup, Bernborough Stakes, BTC Sprint, Coca Cola Stakes), Rocky Court (Sir Winston Churchill Stakes, QTC Guineas, Recognition Stakes, Tatt's President's Handicap, Bernborough Stakes, BTC Silver Dollar), Rathdrum (Albion 2000), O'Hallaran's Eye (Murphy Quality), Fast Talker (Meynink Stakes), Lady Elwes (McDougall Stakes), Hail Report (Meynink Stakes) and Vif (Ascot Handicap).
