Doug Messingham rode with great success in Brisbane, interstate and overseas during his career in which he was regarded as great money rider. He was the stable rider for trainer Alf Sands in the late 1960s and early 1970s and they combined for some huge plunge wins. Messingham also had a reputation for picking up lucky rides, twice getting last minute bookings for Group 1 wins.

His best winners included the AJC Derby (Battle Sign), Rosehill Guineas (Battle Sign), Doomben 10,000 (Blues Finito), Brisbane Cup (Grey Affair), QTC Oaks (Bonnybel), Healy Stakes (Blue's Finito), Ansett Cup (Famoso Gris), Queensland Cup (In Top Swing, Grey Affair), Ascot Handicap (Bengalla Lad), QTC Toorak Handicap (Bengalla Lad), Koomeela Stakes (Amati), AJC Liverpool Cup (Breakfast Creek), Ahern Stakes (Brogilla, Interpid Clipper), Ross Stakes (Brogilla), O'Mara Stakes (Conor), Bernborough Stakes (Golven), Murphy Quality (Brogilla), Carnival Handicap (Golven [2]), Townsville Cup (Invictus), Brisbane Handicap (Ryes Hope), Doomben Stakes (Ryes Hope), Doomben Dollars (Rayloe), Hopeful Stakes (King Capri), McDougall Stakes (Sunset Sue), Piccaninny Stakes (Smokey Civet), Grange Plate (Smokey Civet), Brisbane Handicap (Jimason), Gold Nugget (Definitely Ours) and Weetwood (Viscount Flex, Ascot Bridge).
