Fred Clarke was a top class big race jockey who won a Caulfield Cup on Bore Head in 1965. Clarke went to his grave certain Bore Head would have won that year's Melbourne Cup had he not been brought down in a fall. Clarke was often restricted to top weights late in his career but still rode hundreds of winners.

His best wins were the Caulfield Cup (Bore Head), STC Silver Slipper (Tod Maid), QTC Sires' (Refulgent), QTC Oaks (Ton), Sir Winston Churchill Stakes (Bore Head), McDougall Stakes (Tod Maid, Smart Bint, Memory's Dream), Ahern Stakes (Refulgent), Ipswich Cup (Kashmir, Sir Hua Joy), Albion Park Cup (Sir Hua Joy), Cleveland Bay Handicap (Cabin Inn), Rockhampton Newmarket (Cabin Inn), Bribie Handicap (Dream), Hall Stakes (Just Quietly, El Valido) , Ascot Handicap (Refulgent) and Doomben Newmarket (Rego Lad), Toorak Handicap (Rego Lad), Sapling Stakes (Bulgana), Lilley Handicap (Highcas), Albion 2000 (Sumaco), Kialla Stakes (Refulgent), Hall Stakes (Ivanhoe) and Hopeful Stakes (Bulgana).
