Harry Plant started life as a rodeo rider in north Queensland before turning to training. He moved to Brisbane with one horse, Freebooter, who went on to be a champion "creeker" in the mid 1930s.
Plant moved to Sydney in the late 1930s and became one of Australia's best ever trainers. He is a legend for his work with the champion Bernborough but he had many other good horses.
Some of his best were Bernborough (Doomben 10,000, Doomben Cup, Carrington Stakes, VRC Newmarket, Rawson Stakes, Chipping Norton Stakes, All Aged Stakes, Warwick Stakes, Chelmsford Stakes, Melbourne Stakes, Futurity Stakes, Caulfield Stakes), Fine and Dandy (Golden Slipper, QTC Sires' Produce, AJC Sires' Produce, VRC Maribyrnong Stakes, AJC Doncaster ), Time and Tide (AJC Doncaster, AJC Sires', Champagne Stakes), Coniston (Doomben 10,000, QTC Sires' Produce, QTC Guineas, QTC Lightning), Freebooter (Albion 2000), Man of Iron (QTC Sires', AJC Sires'), Magic Night (Golden Slipper), High Lea (Doomben 10,000) and Bernbrook (Doncaster).
