Henry Davis will always be regarded as one of the best "plunge" trainers ever seen in Australia. A former jockey Davis won four Brisbane premierships during the 1970s when he was the dominate trainer. He was a master conditioner of horses and is the last to train the same horse to win two races on a day at a Brisbane track, Some Idea in October 1976. He later trained for top bookie Mark Read and they combined to pull off two of the biggest plunges in Australian turf history with Getting Closer and High Signal in Sydney restricted races in the early 1980s. His best wins included the Doomben 10,000 (Getting Closer), Trancred (BMW) Stakes (Our Cavalier), Queensland Cup (Lord Rego), Delaney Quality (Innisfree), Eye Liner Stakes (Don't Rush), Weetwood (Ascot Bridge), City Handicap (Ascot Bridge), Ascot Handicap (Piper's Belle), Winter Stakes (Piper's Belle), VRC UCI Stakes (Piper's Belle), Doomben Dollars (Rayloe), Ahern Stakes (Rayloe), Sapphire Bracelet (Rayloe), QTC Toorak (Innisfree), Matchem Handicap (Prince Meteor), Brisbane Handicap (High King), Frazer Handicap (Lord Rego) and Labour Day Cup (Our Cavalier).
