James McGill was one of the great owner-trainers of the Australian turf, he was a regular at top meetings throughout the nation for 50 years. His best horse was Fitz Grafton which eventually raced in India and Europe. When McGill died in 1918 he had won every major race in Brisbane.
His best horses included Fitz Grafton (Brisbane Cup , Stradbroke, QTC Derby, QTC Guineas, Sandgate Handicap), Sunrise (Brisbane Cup), Proctor (Brisbane Cup, Brisbane Handicap, Moreton Handicap), Pirate (Brisbane Handicap), Mozart (Brisbane Cup), Lancer (Brisbane Cup) Lyndhurst (Brisbane Cup) Truce (Autumn Stakes), North Australian (Spring Cup), Nortre Dame (Southport Handicap), Bucolic (Southport Handicap), Grand Chester (Hopeful Stakes), Olive Branch (Sandgate Handicap), Preston (Moreton Handicap), Olive Garde (QTC St Leger) and La Grange (QTC St Leger).
