Mel Schumacher was a star apprentice of the 1950s who was still riding Group 1 and feature race winners in the 1980s. However, there is no doubt that he would have been an immortal had he not spent long periods on the sidelines. He was Australia's form jockey when disqualified for five years in 1962 for the infamous leg pull case in the AJC Derby. It slowed Schumacher's career and although he returned a top jockey his best years were probably spent on the sidelines.
His best wins included the Melbourne Cup (Baystone), Golden Slipper Stakes (Magic Night), Doomben 10,000 (Aquanita, Charlton Boy), AJC Derby (Skyline), Australian Cup (Dream King), Oakleigh Plate (Mr Illusion), Flight Stakes (Goleen), Thousand Guineas (Goleen), QTC Sires' (Prince Gauntlet), AJC Epsom (Turkestan), VRC Sires' (Flying Fable), Hill Stakes (Skyline), George Main Stakes (Second Earl), VRC Hotham Handicap (Baystone), Colin Stephens Stakes (Baron Boussier), Brisbane Handicap (Charlton Boy), Queensland Cup (General Fox, Easy Now), Koomeela Stakes (Manilove), Moreton Handicap (Morning Joy), QTC Guineas (Night Charmer), Sapphire Bracelet (Night Charmer), Meynink Stakes (Pete's Choice, Positano), Captain Cook Stakes (Hillside, Charlton Boy), Goldmarket (Charlton Boy ), Albion Park Cup (Ima Shadow), Sir Winston Churchill Stakes (Ima Shadow), Bernborough Stakes (Ima Shadow), Gold Coast Cup (Ima Shadow), Ascot Handicap (Ima Shadow, Prince Gauntlet, Just Now, Lord Diere), McDougall Stakes (Honey Grove), Coca Cola Stakes (Pete's Choice), O'Mara Stakes (Anorak), Exhibition Handicap (Earlmark), City Handicap (Grifite), Piccaninny Stakes (Witchel), QTC Toorak Handicap (Samei Boy), Prunda Stakes (Red Seas), Queensland Maiden (Strawberry Road), Brisbane Handicap (Camahuge), Weetwood (Combo), Barnes Plate (Mediterranean), Exhibition Handicap (Kharass) and O'Shea Stakes (Nourishing).
