Neil Birrer is regarded by many as one of the best front-running jockey's ever produced in Queensland. If Birrer was able to get the lead he often outfoxed his rival jockeys. There was no better example than his win on Meanmi Shadow in the QTC Oaks.
During his 25 years in the saddle Birrer won most of Brisbane's best races. His son Gavin was later a top apprentice before being forced to retire by weight.
Neil Birrer's best wins were the Stradbroke Handicap (Wallgar), QTC Derby (Honest Man, Raajpoot), QTC Oaks (Hoa Hine, Meanmi Shadow, Kazan Retto), QTC St Leger (Penny Polo), Tattersall's Cup (River Seine), Labour Day Cup (Ermis), Darling Downs Breeders' Stakes (Hoss), J.T. Delaney Quality (Charlton Boy, Todwana), Queensland Cup (Raajpoot), QTC Lightning (Amberdue), Carnival Hcp (Duchense), QTC Toorak Handicap (Charlton Boy), QTC Metropolitan (Pictawin), Gold Coast Cup (Masalama), Ascot Handicap (Ngaruawahia), Albion Park Cup (Torquar), Albion 2000 (Ngaruawahia), Claret Stakes (Rushkana), Sapling Stakes (Take Leave), Doomben Newmarket (Hoss, Regal Dignity), McDougall Stakes (New Venn), ITC Breeders' Stakes (Court Rush), Club Stakes (Tempting Touch), Lonergan Stakes (Kieron Prince, Kiwanis), Frazer Handicap (Emperor's Flight), St Aubin Stakes (Top Command), May Handicap (Aladdin's Lamp), Suburban Stakes (Kharass) and Hall Stakes (Emuroo).
