If the Queensland Government had not intervened in 1896 the Deagon racetrack would never have been sold. This article from 1974 details how the Government intervened at the request of the trustees who were indebted to the Queensland National Bank. In 1896 the Sandgate Racecourse Bill was carried 25 votes to 15 in which the Sandgate Town Council took over the debt and the right of ownership.
